6 Home Made Teas for Weight Loss

Home made teas have the advantage that they let you control every thing you intend to ingest. You can discard any unacceptable ingredients and largely modify their amounts as they are not standardized for a precise content, so that they become more palatable, convenient or beneficial to you.

Certainly, there is no miracle tea that will do all the work for you. You should have your plan of weight loss and these teas may help you to better commit to your plan. None of these teas contain those serious ingredients that may affect your health negatively, like Senna which may induce hypokalemia ( decreased blood Potassium) which may lead to serious effects including cardiac arrest and death, if used unwisely.

These teas have another advantage of keeping you away from the buzz of the debate about
their use. Many people use them regularly without planning for weight loss.

The oriental teas are used to be boiled with water, or soaked in cold or hot water, and their
constituents are household spices that may be used regularly.

These are your teas for weight loss:-
1- Sage: boil 1 tablespoonful of Sage herb in a cup of water. Drink it in the evening.

2- Cumin: soak 1 tablespoonful of Cumin seeds in boiling water, put Lemon slices in the water, leave it overnight. Drink it before breakfast.

3- Chicory ( leaves, flowers and roots): Boil 1 tablespoonful in a cup of water. Drink it 3 times daily for 3 weeks.

4- Ginseng: It is said to generally exert offsetting breakdown and building up of carbohydrates, lipids and protein metabolism. It backs up the response to stress.

5- Green Tea: It is well known to have antioxidant effects as well as it is a supplement to aid
weight loss.

6- Apple vinegar: add 1 teaspoonful to a cup of cold water. Drink it before breakfast.

There are some seeds that help you regulate taste and convenience of your teas. They are all
used in many ready-made weight loss teas. These are: Fennel- Caraway- Anise- Coriander,
in addition to Peppermint herb.

You still can drink Cherry and Pineapple juices as they are known to be good for weight loss.

Saturated Fats and Heart Diseases

Saturated fats in butter, meat, eggs, vegetable oils do not increase heart diseases as processed foods do. At least when they are heated they do not acquire trans fats. Statistics show that the increase in heart diseases is associated with use of processed foods and not saturated fats. It is the processing of fats and not their type that may predispose our hearts to disease.

The Diet Solution Program is a rocketing diet program that utilized this fact to recommend, that you include meals that contain saturated fats like butter, eggs, coconut oil, lean meat ....etc to lose weight.

Food Deficiencies Induce Weight Gain in The Middle Aged People

The new "High Metabolism Diet" recommends overcoming the problem of food deficiencies that may slow down metabolism and induce weight gain in the middle age.

Except increased acohol consumption which may be used as a fuel instead of food, and increased intake of pesticdes that can trigger weight gain, the researchers point to the following points as factors in gaining weight:

- Not taking enough calories - It should not be less than 1500 calories per day
- Not eating breakfast - They found that women who escaped this meal are 4 1/2 tmes as likely to be obese
- Not drinking coffe or tea - Catechins boost metabolism
- Not eating enough fibers - You should aim at 25 grams per day
- Not drinking enough water - 1.5 Liters per day or even more
- Not eating organic foods - To avoid contamination with pesticides
- Not eating enough protein - It should not be less than 80 grams per day
- Not taking enough Iron - You should include iron rich fooods such as shellfish, lean meats, beans, fortified cereals, and spinach in your food
- Not taking enough vitamin D - It should not be less than 400 ID per day
- Not taking enough Calcium - Fat free milk and low fat yogurt are good sources of calcium

How Can Zero Calories Increase Weight

Lab study ties artificial sweetener to weight gain - Diet and nutrition- msnbc.com

The researchers said sweet foods may prompt the body to get ready to take in a lot of calories as glucose receptors in the gut open, but when sweetness in the form of artificial sweeteners is not followed by a large amount of calories, the body gets confused, which may lead to eating more or expending less energy than normal.

Consequently, if you drink a glass of water that contains artificial sweetener and zero calories, this will provoke your body to eat more!

A New Way to Count Calories

This is my new blog about a new way of counting calories. The main cause why I set this blog up is the difficulty in shifting from consuming 5000, 4000, or even 3000 Calories a day to
1000 or 800 Calories a day in some diet plans. It will deal with different types of food and how you can
derive the required information by yourself to start up , or maintain a weight loss plan.

Welcome to my new blog !.

Count 2000 Calories
This blog is about how,why and when should you count 2000 Calories every day.
Learn how to count by yourself !

Why do You Count 2000 Calories
But why do you need to count 2000 calories, and over which period of time will you need to count 2000 calories?.
A human being needs around 2000 calories daily, and human race consumes more than 12 trillion calories (6 billion humans x 2000 calories) every day, the spare calories left after doing the basic activities are utilized to either build proteins mostly before the age of 30, or to build fats mostly after the age of 30.

Calorie Consumption Pattern Before 30 :
Over 30, the body has its own laws that work differently from that way we experienced before 30. From birth to full growth in the early 20s, the hormonal balance in our bodies is dominated by the anabolic hormonal orchestra that utilizes most of the consumed calories to build the body organs.
The anabolic - building - hormonal orchestra is composed primarily of Growth hormone, Sex hormones (mainly male sex hormone), together with Thyroid hormones.

Growth hormone and Calorie Regulation :
Growth hormone derives calories basically from fats (fatty acids), spares carbohydrates and build proteins. This is explained as follows :

* Growth hormone suppresses storage of calories in the form of fats by fat cells, through :
1- It stimulates fat cells to increase calorie production through stimulation of triglycerides breakdown and releasing fatty acids to be oxidized.
2- It decreases the ability of fat cells to store calories through suppressing their ability to take up and accumulate lipids.

* Growth hormone directs the body to consume calories in production of proteins, through stimulating the liver and other tissues to secrete insulin like growth hormone which is the key player in muscle growth, as it stimulates amino acid uptake and reduces their oxidation, thus preventing them from being used as a calorie source.

* Growth hormone carbohydrate sparing effect, preserves them to be stored in the "on-call" or "stand-by" form, i.e. Glycogen, so that they serve as the calorie store for prompt demand by the muscles and the Red Blood Corpuscles, moreover this effect helps maintain blood glucose within the normal range, and maintains supply of sufficient amounts of essential sugars required for structural purposes.

Sex Hormones and Calorie Regulation :

* Testosterone ( male sex hormone) stimulates protein metabolism, promotes burning of fats, and accelerates muscle growth, producing fat free muscle of greater size.
* Absence of Estrogen ( a female sex hormone) receptors in the brain of experimental rats, were found in a recent study in Rockefeller university, to lead to less calorie expenditure. The rats also developed several hallmarks, including glucose intolerance and resistance to insulin.

Calorie Consumption pattern After 30 :
1- Levels of Anabolic Hormones :
* Growth Hormone:At the age of 25 -the peak time for growth hormone- the total secreted amount is 600 mcg/day. It decreases by age and goes down to 15 percent of this amount at the age of 60-70, this ratio can be accelerated by unbalanced diet to happen at 40-50. Rough estimation of its level at different ages is as follows:At the age of 20, growth hormone secretion is 500 mcg/day, at the age of 40, growth hormone secretion is 200 mcg/day,at the age of 80, growth hormone secretion is 25 mcg/day.

* Sex hormones :
The high level of testosterone in males starts to decline in the third decade and this decline proceeds with age, leading to marked lower levels of bio available testosterone in substantial proportion of elderly men compared to the young adult male range.
In females, all hormones abruptly decline after menopause.

2- Calorie consumption pattern :
After 30 , there are different factors influencing calorie consumption pattern, these are :# Decreased levels of anabolic hormones.
# Decreased expenditure of calories with sedentary life.
# Abundance of nutrients that are in less demand.
# A battery of catabolic hormones, that degrade body tissues, primarily the muscles. They are present all the life time, yet some of them are not endocrine in nature ( not submitted to age changes ), they are available on demand in stress conditions ( fight or flight ), examples are: Cortisol and Epinephrine.

This new situation dictates the body to convert surplus calories into a storage form that meets the following criteria :
# It delivers the substrate for calorie production in a form that can be acted upon by the predominant hormones ( many of them derive calories from fatty acids, e.g. Epinephrine, Cortisol and Glucagon).
# It is an efficient storage form on weight basis, to store a lot of calories that are neither used for building tissues, nor consumed in physical activity.
The form that fulfils these criteria is FATS.

The base line is that whenever you need to consider changing your eating behaviour, you should start with the scientifically calculated calorie needs per day. You have to count 2000 calories every day.

Glycemic Index Food

Glycemic Index of food is one of its most important traits.

*** What is Glycemic Index
The glycemic index is a conventional measure of how quick a food can raise our blood sugar. Foods are given a rating from 0 to 100 on the glycemic index with glucose in the highest position.
The more the simple sugar - such as glucose, sucrose or starch - a food contains, the higher is its glycemic index rating, and vice verse, where food containing complex carbohydrate increases blood sugar slowly, and thus it has a low glycemic index rating.
If we are to assist weight loss or control diabetes we should be concerned about glycemic index of food we eat.

*** How does our bodies respond to different Glycemic Index ratings :
There are individual variations in response to different types of food with different glycemic index ratings. Factors controlling the body response to glycemic index may be divided into two sets:
* Factors related to the body includes:1- Age 2- Activity level 3-Time of the day when eating 4-Insulin activity 5- Body metabolism

* Factors related to food include :
1- Amount of fibers, fats and proteins in a food.
2- Ratio of carbohydrates to fats and proteins in a food.
3- How refined is a food,i.e. a food contains less fibers.
4- How processed is a food (are fats leaked out or added to a food, since fats slow down gastric motility).

The response of the body to glycemic index is determined by the carbohydrate form and content in a food on the one hand, and how quickly the intestines deliver glucose to the blood on the other hand. The intestines are the fixed element for 1 person and the changeable one is the food entering it.

The food either contains simple or complex carbohydrates. By simple we mean that carbohydrates are simply digested, and complex carbohydrates are indigestible.
If we look at the chemical structure of both starch (simple) and cellulose (complex), we find that the building unit is one and the same molecule (glucose), yet the way these building units are linked to each other determines its stereo shape, and consequently their reaction to enzymes. Animals including humans can only digest simple carbohydrates (starch), while complex carbohydrates (cellulose) can only be digested by bacteria, which digests cellulose for the ruminant animals, and then the animal digests bacteria.

Besides the low content of the complex, they have another property that affects glycemic index of a food, that is their ability to absorb a good deal of water which makes them move in an apathetic lagging pattern, and this in turn makes them:
1- Deliver their trapped digestible content slowly.
2- Consume calories along their way inside the digestive canal (that is what happens with negative calorie foods)

Food that contains starch, like pasta , white bread, and Potatoes will rate high on the glycemic index. More ratings for foods that contain simpler sugars such as soft drinks, sweets, candies, chocolate bars..etc
Foods that contain complex carbohydrates like whole grains, Rye bread, breakfast cereals (which are based on wheat bran, barley, and Oats),fruits, Lentils, Soybeans, baked beans...etc. have low glycemic index ratings.

The complex carbohydrates with low glycemic index may not necessarily be present in food as is in nature, rather it can be admixed with other types of food as made by some food manufacturers, and this incurs a new property to the food known as glycemic load , yet this is another story.

How to utilize Glycemic index :
1- If you appreciate what is in this article (hopefully you dig it), then you will find that glycemic index may be a helpful planning tool, specially when you watch your body response to types of food with different glycemic index ratings.
2- Low glycemic index food will release glucose over a longer period of time, and you will feel less inclined to eat, because energy is slowly released into the blood stream, a good tool for those planning to lose weight.
3- High glycemic index food is good for raising low blood sugar after intense exercising, whereas low glycemic food is good for maintaining blood sugar levels for longer periods of exercise.
4- A diabetic person can use glycemic index in conjunction with other meal programs to assist in managing diabetes.

LOW GLYCEMIC INDEX = 55
INTERMEDIATE GLYCEMIC INDEX = 55 - 70
HIGH GLYCEMIC INDEX = MORE THAN 70.

South Beach Diet Aid

This is your aid for evaluating South Beach Diet, if your are feeling you need some hints or tips on how to form your own overview.

South Beach Diet is founded by a cardiologist - Dr Agatston - who has designed a diet for patients with heart diseases, but they lost significant amounts of weight as a side effect pf this diet. Dr Agatston describes it as your plan to eat the right carbs and the right fats to lose weight and protect your heart.

Cutting Carbs and Ketosis :
It is based on the same theory underlying the Atkins diet but with some modifications, i.e. Ketosis, in which we force the body to maintain blood glucose - the energy store of the brain -, by synthesizing glucose inside the body from fat and protein stores, rather than waiting for external supply which is arbitrarily determined by appetite and sateity feeling.
Ketosis occurs when the blood glucose levels fall down the normal levelwithout external supply of glucose. to induce ketosis, you should cut out all carbswith high glycemic index - that pours high glucose amounts in the blood quickly - leading to increased blood glucose concentration.
South Beach Diet severely restricts carbs during the first 2 weeks, before it gradually re-introduce those carbs with low glycemic index. It also recommends unsaturated fats in place of saturated fats.

South Beach diet breaks the vicious circle of carbs--> Insulin--> hunger--> carbs, by allowing foods with low glycemic index such as pasta, pulses, and porridge, and these slowly release glucose into the blood, providing a steady supply of energy and you feel satisfied for longer time rather than carving carbs with high glycemic index which release more Insulin that forces you to carving more carbs and so on.This is the first modification of Atkins' which completely restricts carbs.

FATS : they should be mentioned by Dr Agatston as a cardiologist, thus he replaces saturates with monounsaturates such as olive oil and nuts.

THE PLAN is divided into 3 phases which starts with banning most carbs except low glycemic vegs such as Broccoli and Cabbage, and the focus is on eating lean meat, chicken, fish, eggs, low fat cheese, some nuts and olive oil, the second stage allows low glycemic carbs including most fruits, whole grain cereals, and pasta , and the third and the last phase allows a larger variety of foods to stay on for life. The phases are based on a combined time and weight loss schedule. The full details of the plan are better given by the South Beach Diet people themselves.
South Beach Diet claims the result is that you can lose 8- 13 lb in the first 2 weeks, and once you enter the second phase you can expect to lose 1-2 lb/week.

THE PROS :

# The diet takes the heart health in consideration, you can eat a lot of delicious foods if you limit saturated fats and trans fats.

# No major groups of food are eliminated.
* You can 'de-junk' your diet and cut down on carb rich foods ( white bread, sugary cereals, and sweets).

# No starving or fasting involved:
* You can have more energy and do not get tired if you start eating the low glycemic index way.
* You won't get hungry after you stop eating sugars, white flower, high glycemic index white rice, and potatoes.
* You can stop craving for high sugar foods after you stop eating them.

# Dieter compliance:
* The diet follows the basic principles of healthy eating and, the list of the low glycemic index foods involves a wide variety of nutrients.
* You can twist between its phases, cheat a little and a few weeks back on phase one.
* You can avoid phase 1, and start on phase 2, and get one of the better diets available.
* You get a true new life style through South Beach Diet.

THE CONS :
# The first 2 weeks of extreme carb restriction requires serious willpower and may leave you weak and wobbly.
# You will not get your recommended fruit and veg each day, and you miss out on some vitamins, minerals, and fibers.
# South beach diet does not fully cater for people who do not or cannot eat dairy. It bans soy in phase 1.
# Most of the 8-13 lb lost in phase 1 are likely to be water loss ( No one explains how).
# Some experts do not necessarily agree that you should completely ban all high glycemic foods, because glycemic index changes considerably when foods are eaten together.
# Most nutrition experts are less happy with the recommended weight loss. They see that you lose no more than 2 lb/week for good health, and this contradicts the large weight loss in the first 2 weeks.
# Most nutrition and fitness experts believe it is impossible to lose weight from just one part of your body, arguing losing weight specifically from midriff.
# Few experts argue with a diet that recommends cutting down on processed carbs and swapping foods rich in saturates for those containing mono-unsaturated fats.

The bottom line that South Beach Diet is a good alternative if you can escape its cons and stick to its pros.

Weight Loss Made Easy in 2007

Weight loss isn't easy to achieve but with a little determination and quality information you can make it happen. Many of you will start off the New Year with excitement about reaching your ultimate goals. Keep that excitement and let's begin with weight loss.

Weight loss is not something that can be done quickly in most cases, and indeed, as long as you are not competing Claudia Shaffer, why hurry! Don't go beyond"I Lost xx lbs in a week or a month..." It's more of a lifestyle change that you desire. If you really want to change then do it, learn how to do it.
A healthier you is a slimmer you! Take a healthy approach to life if you want to reap the benefits of weight loss. Your body can't function correctly and eliminate body waste efficiently if it's not in shape.
Some points you want to consider for your new healthier weight loss program will be gaining the knowledge to succeed. Another matter is your overall health.

weight loss is not easy and effortless. You will have to put work into it just as you do with other important things in your life. You just have to decide precisely what is important to you and if it is worth your precious time. I hope that you begin to think weight loss is one of your
ultimate goals this year.
Learn about portion sizes and negative calories.Calories do count though so make sure that you do count them if you want to see greater weight loss results.Put 2000-2500 Calories/day as a start, and to quit your
dinner as your final goal.

Some nutritious foods are known as "Negative Calories Foods". What are these "magical" foods? Tomatoes actually burn more calories when you eat them then they contain. Other foods that may fit into this category are: • Apples • Grapefruit • Oranges • Lettuce • Onion • Spinach • Broccoli • Celery and more that you can see in the archives. This means that you are consuming fewer calories than you are burning by your effort to chew and consume them. You burn more energy digesting them than they actually contain, simply because they gain weight when saturated with water, then
they need more energy to be moved off than other foods(if you want to go
deeper in their mechanism of action, just go to the archive).
Most negative calorie foods contain plenty of vitamins, minerals and enzymes to break down these foods for better digestion.

Portions are another key point to consider. You must realize that you have been forced by the media and fast food restaurants to consume unnatural portion sizes. "Super size it" is a phrase that you will realize is harmful to your health. "Just say no" is your new positive motto.
Eat your larger meals earlier in the day and don't skip breakfast. You may have greater results by setting a plan to eat six smaller meals throughout the day , and to exclude dinner from them.

Exercise can also help lose weight when you choose the appropriate one for your health condition.

OK,wanna easy scheme to start with? here it is :
Put a plan that you will eat 2000-2500 Calories/day, count 1 gram of carbohydrates and protein as 5 Calorie and 1 gram of fat as 9 Calories
and there is no need for precision, approximate every thing until you reach your goals and help yourself to just do that. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits and add fats if you want, until you find yourself having no desire in dinner! This is the key gold to weight loss and preserving a desired weight.

"Low Carb" or Lower Carb?

Low carb, low fat are terms that are extensively used for sometime ago. the frequent use of these terms created an active attitude towards them, yet it did not create the necessary attitude of digging under them. As a result, many people actually dealt with ' labels' rather than trying to understand the right full scheme needed for keeping good health, with a serious impact on public health.

I read an opinion survey that contained so many funny things reflecting the level of awareness of some people with the meaning of ' low carb' and ' low fat' terms. You would agree with me when you know some of them:
# "It is the carbohydrates and not calories that contribute to weight gain".
# " Low carb diets are associated with the prevention of disease".
# " Restriction of carbohydrates consumption( meaning less fruits, honey, vegetables and whole grains), reduces the risk of certain cancers.
# " Diabetics need low carb" ( Contrary to the institutional recommendation that people should consume a diet that include a variety of carbohydrates containing foods).
# Those on low carb diet consume more meat and fewer other foods ( like fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low fat dairy products), though the American National Cancer Institute recommendsdaily 5 servings of fiber rich fruits and vegetables and 3 of low fat dairy products.
# Many folks do not know the appropriate amount of carb daily intake, some said it is 10 , 5 and 0.5 g !!

Some low-carb diet producers start people at 20 g carbohydrates daily ( I would have been died starving going this way), others say 30, 60, 100, 150 and 200 g carb daily intake.

To correct the situation we should search the scientific basis for good health.
-Texts tell us that the average person needs of energy is 2000-3000 Calories/day according to hist ype of activity.
-American National Academy of Health recommends that children and adults get a minimum of 130g of carbohydrates daily.
-Maximum Calorie intake of fat derived calories should not exceed 30% of total calories, and not more than 10% of them are saturated fats ( away from trans fats). This corresponds to 60-80 g fat/day ideally.

Now, if you are overweight, then you should be ingesting more than 3000 Calories daily. If you go according to the mentioned outline, then you should be eating 120 g fats/day which produce 1080 Calories. If you divide the rest of your calorie gain equally between carbohydrates and protein, then you should be eating 300 g carbohydrates and 300 g proteins daily.

If you want to lose weight, you should CUT DOWN TOTAL CALORIES, beginning with carbohydrates and redistributing your calorie intake between fats and proteins.

Certainly your weight gain is caused by calorie gain, so cut them down, but do not forget that you need different carbohydrates like fibers and essential sugars, as well as you need different fats like polyunsaturated fats and lecithin.
Moreover, you need the delecious taste of both.
